Characteristics of Behavioral and Emotional Disabilities: SPED 630
This course opened my eyes to the extensive research that has been conducted as to how we can help students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. The first part of the course helped me to learn the historical perspective. I came to understand how these people were treated in the past, and gained an appreciation for how much support there is for them today. In a school setting and as a school leader I will need to advocate for a solid special education program and be aware of these disibilities so we can help students overcome them.
I really appreciated the section of this course that opened my eyes to the types of disorders that exist. We worked in groups and conducted a lot of research as we completed our assignments. I came to understand the causes of these behaviors and disabilities. The causes vary from biological, familial, school, and cultural. We also learned about what we can do to assess these disorders and how we can help modify them. I learned how all of this applies to the school setting, and worked to create strategies for the classroom. There is a lot that we as teachers can do to recognize and help these students with special needs.
All of the work that my group did for this class has been put together into a presentation on Google and can be accessed in the link below. This class helped me so much because this is the first class in which I have ever learned about these emotional and behavioral disabilities in depth. There is a special place in my heart for these students that struggle and it is important to be correctly informed as to how we can successfully work with them and help them overcome their disabilities.
