Supervision of Instruction: EDAD 632
In this class I learned valuable information on what it takes to become a great instructional facilitator. The textbooks we used were based on Danielson's framework for teaching and reassured me that there is best practice material and rubrics available upon which we can design effective teaching framework and help guide teachers to not only proficiency, but to become excellent teachers. I know that to become an excellent teacher one needs support and guidance in becoming a reflective teacher.
I learned a lot in this course that will help me in a human relations aspect as I work with teachers who are under-performing. It helped me understand what to do in specific scenarios, and how to help teacher write professional growth plans and monitor progress or lack thereof. Although it would be hard to let someone go it would be important to the growth of a school if the teacher isn't willing to cooperate and fulfill their assigned duties.
Assessment of teachers is what this class was all about, and although I would like more practice with this, I feel much more comfortable with the idea of the whole process. I know it is important to be transparent with your teachers so they feel comfortable and understand how they will be evaluated. As a principal I would integrate these expectations into our staff meetings and professional development days so everyone feels the whole process is transparent. I know as a teacher it is nice to feel comfortable when the administrator comes to my room and to know they will be unbiased in how they evaluate me.
Recently I helped develop a mentor program for my school and we integrated a lot of Danielson's Teaching Framework into our trainings we will give our new teachers next year. It is also a great tool for self reflection. I know it is important as an administrator to not only be a good leader, but to be able to demonstrate best teaching practices while conducting trainings and staff developments.
