Curriculum Development: EDCI 635
As a teacher and future educational leader this class was most beneficial. I learned about all the aspects of curriculum development and put them into practice by creating a curriculum of my own for my Yearbook, photography, and design class. I gained a greater understanding of the curriculum design process, and how one should implement it within a school district. It was especially nice to gain an understanding of the whole process and learn about the importance of rotating curriculum on a 5 year review cycle so you don't have to review it every year, but so it doesn't become too outdated.
I have had several opportunities to put my skills and knowledge into practice. Currently I am in charge of writing a 2-12 art curriculum for my whole school district. It is a daunting task, but important. I have learned how important it is to work backwards understanding your end goals first such as what you want students to learn and be able to do and what standards you must help them reach, and then working towards building specific units and lessons to address and accomplish those goals.
Living and working in a small district I have gained valuable experience by seeing our superintendent work as our curriculum director. I have learned that it it hard to wear many hats. It has also taught me about how hard it is to start from scratch. Once a district has a curriculum they can put it on a cycle, but not having a set curriculum our district has had a hard time getting teachers the time they need to write everything out. We are currently using a program called ATLAS and it has some nice features that allow a teacher to input their curriculum, assessments, and standards all in one place. It provides views of all your units so you can see your plan for the whole year, and allows you to click into each unit to add content and view what you have planned. I know that I must continue to increase my knowledge and understanding of curriculum, but this class taught me a lot that I hadn't been aware of before.
